Trains Cancellation Policy



E-Ticket booked for IRCTC Trains can be cancelled online and refund will be granted by the system as per IRCTC Refund Rules, as follows:

Important Information:

Confirmed Tatkal tickets are non-refundable at all times.

For tickets including Senior Citizen Concession, Ladies Quota, Tatkal Contingent cancellation, Waitlisted Tatkal ticket, and other Normal Transactions, railway rules apply as below –



  1. Cancellation Charges for Confirmed Tickets:

The amount deducted is based on the time of cancellation and the status of your ticket at the time of cancellation. Detailed explanations are given below:

  1. If a confirmed ticket is cancelled online more than forty-eight (48) hours in advance of the scheduled departure of the train, a minimum per passenger cancellation charges shall be deducted at the flat rate as below:

  1. If a confirmed ticket is cancelled online between forty-eight hours (48) and up to twelve (12) hours before the scheduled departure of the train, cancellation charges will be deducted as follows:

25% (Twenty Five percent) of the fare subject to the minimum cancellation charge referred to in clause 1(a) plus GST applicable for all AC Classes



  1. If a confirmed ticket is cancelled online within twelve (12) hours and up to four (4) hours before the scheduled departure of the train, cancellation charges will be deducted as follows:

50% (Fifty percent) of the fare subject to the minimum cancellation charge referred to in clause 1(a) plus GST applicable for all AC Classes



  1. No refund of fare shall be admissible on the tickets having confirmed reservation in case ticket is not cancelled online or TDR not filed online up to four (4) hours before the scheduled departure of the train

  1. No refund of fare shall be admissible on RAC e-tickets in case the ticket is not cancelled or TDR not filed online up to 30 minutes before the scheduled departure of the train

  1. For Tatkal Tickets Booked as e-Tickets: no refund on confirmed Tatkal Tickets. Refer Clause (12)





  1. Cancellation Charges for RAC or Waitlisted Tickets:

  1. In case of e-tickets shall be cancelled online or online TDR shall be filed within the time limits prescribed under these rules for obtaining refund

  1. Where a RAC ticket or wait-listed ticket is presented for cancellation, the refund of fare shall be made after deducting the clerkage if the ticket is present for cancellation upto 30 minutes before the scheduled departure of the train irrespective of the distance.

  1. No refund shall be granted on RAC ticket or wait-listed ticket after 30 minutes before the scheduled departure of the train.

  1. Where confirmed reservation has been provided to RAC or wait-listed ticket holder at any time upto final preparation of reservation chart, such ticket shall be treated as a reserved ticket and cancellation charges shall be payable in accordance with clause 1(Cancellation Charges for Confirmed Tickets)



  1. Cancellation Charges for Wait List Tickets Dropped from Charting:

In case of wait-listed e-tickets on which all the passengers are on waiting list even after preparation of reservation chart, names of all such passengers booked on that Passenger Name Record (PNR) will be dropped from the reservation chart and refund of fare will be credited back to the account from which booking transaction took place, after deducting cancellation charges.



  1. Cancellation Charges for Partially Confirmed Tickets:

  1. In case of e-tickets shall be cancelled online or online TDR shall be filed within the time limits prescribed under these rules for obtaining refund

  1. In case, on a party e-ticket or a family e-ticket issued for travel of more than one passenger, some passengers have confirmed reservation and others are on waiting list, full refund of fare, less cancellation charges as below shall be admissible for confirmed passengers also subject to the condition that the ticket shall be cancelled online or online TDR shall be filed for all the passengers up to 30 minutes before the Scheduled Departure of the Train

  1. In case of party e-ticket or family e-ticket issued for travel of more than one passenger, some passengers have confirmed reservation and others are on the list of waiting list, then in case of passengers in waiting list not travelling, a certificate shall be obtained by travelling passengers from the ticket checking staff to that effect and refund of fare shall be processed online through TDR, indicating the details of the certificate issued by ticket checking staff and the online TDR shall be filed up to seventy-two (72) hours of actual arrival of the train at passengers' destination and the original certificate issued by ticket checking staff shall be sent through post to Group General Manager/IT, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd., Internet Ticketing Centre, IRCA Building, State Entry Road, New Delhi – 110055



  1. Cancellation Charges for Full Cancellation of Train (from originating station to destination station):

In case of full cancellation of trains from source to destination, automatic full refund of fare on confirmed e-tickets will be directly credited back to the account from which booking transaction took place, and online cancellation or filing of TDR is not required in such cases



  1. Cancellation Charges for Partial Cancellation of Train:

In case of partial train cancellation, train diverted, train short terminated etc., TDR is required to be filed online up to Seventy Two (72) Hours of the Scheduled Departure of the Train at Passenger’s Boarding Station



  1. Cancellation Charges for Train Running More than 3 Hours Late and Passenger not travelled:

No cancellation charge will be levied and full fare will be refunded back to all passengers holding fully or partially confirmed tickets, if the journey is not undertaken due to late running of the train by more than three hours of the scheduled departure of the train from the station commencing journey subject to the condition that:

  1. Train is running late by more than three hours at the passenger boarding station

  2. TDR is filed online before the actual departure of the train, for availing full refund

  3. All passengers booked on a PNR have not travelled

In case the ticket is cancelled, or if the request for refund of fare is filed online after the actual departure of train, No refund of fare will be admissible



  1. Cancellation of tickets where railway administration is unable to provide accommodation:

Where a railway administration is unable to provide accommodation for any reason whatsoever to passengers holding reserved tickets, no cancellation charge shall be levied and full refund of fare shall be granted to them if such tickets are surrendered for refund within three hours from the actual departure of the train.

Provided that when the train is cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances such as accident, breach or flood, the ticket is surrendered within three days excluding the scheduled day of departure of the train.



  1. Refund on partially used tickets:

  1. Where a passenger terminates the journey enroute, a ticket deposit receipt (TDR) shall be issued to the ticket holder by the station master of the station in lieu of surrender of the ticket. The original certificate issued by ticket checking staff shall be sent through post to: Group General Manager/IT, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd., Internet Ticketing Centre, IRCA Building, State Entry Road, New Delhi – 110055.
  1. In case of i-ticket, The TDR shall be issued only upto three days after the scheduled departure of the train.
  1. In case of e-ticket, TDR is filed online upto 72 hours after the scheduled departure of the train.
  1. The TDR shall be issued to the passenger and the passenger may apply for refund of fare within ten days from the date of commencement of journey.



  1. Refund of certain fare on failure to provide air-conditioning facility in air-conditioned coaches:

Where the air-conditioning facility could not be provided for a portion of journey, refund on tickets issued for air-conditioned coaches shall be granted for such portion on the following basis namely

  1. If the ticket is for air-conditioned first class, the difference between the air-conditioned first class fare and first class fare;
  1. If the ticket is for air-conditioned II-tier or air-conditioned III-tier class, the difference between air-conditioned II-tier or air-conditioned III tier class fare and sleeper class fare(Mail and Express);
  1. If the ticket is for air-conditioned chair car, the difference between air-conditioned chair car fare and second class fare (Mail and Express);
  1. If the ticket is for executive class, the difference between the notified executive class fare for the concerned section and first class fare (Mail and Express) for the concerned distance of that section.

In case of e-ticket, the online TDR shall be filed upto twenty hours of actual arrival of the train at passenger’s destination and the original certificate (GC/EFT) issued by the ticket checking staff (TTE) at the time of journey is to be send to following address: through post: Group General Manager/IT, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd., Internet Ticketing Centre, IRCA Building, State Entry Road, New Delhi – 110055.

In case of i-ticket, the original certificate (GC/EFT) issued by the ticket checking staff (TTE) at the time of journey is to be send to following address through post: Group General Manager/IT, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd., Internet Ticketing Centre, IRCA Building, State Entry Road, New Delhi – 110055.

Refund will be processed through TDR only after receiving the original certificate (GC/EFT). IRCTC will forward the claim to Concerned Zonal Railways under whose jurisdiction the train destination falls. After receipt of the refund amount from the said Railway, refund amount will be credited back to same account of user through which payment was made through opted payment Gateway.



  1. Refund of fare when passenger are made to travel in lower class for want of accommodation:

If the ticket holder of a higher class is made to travel in a lower class for want accommodation in the class for which the ticket was issued, refund of the difference between the fare paid and the fare payable for the class in which it is actually used.

In case of e-ticket, the online TDR shall be filed within two days of the date of issue of the certificate (excluding the day of issue of the certificate) and the original certificate (GC/EFT) issued by the ticket checking staff (TTE) at the time of journey is to be send to following address: through post:

Group General Manager/IT, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd., Internet Ticketing Centre, IRCA Building, State Entry Road, New Delhi – 110055.

In case of i-ticket, the original certificate (GC/EFT) issued by the ticket checking staff (TTE) at the time of journey is to be send to following address through post:

  1. TATKAL Tickets:

  1. No refund of fare shall be admissible on confirmed Tatkal Tickets
  1. Grant of refund for unused Cancellation Charges for RAC or Waitlisted Tickets as per clause 2 " Cancellation Charges for RAC or Waitlisted Tickets"
  1. In case of party tatkal ticket or family tatkal ticket issued for travel for more than one passenger, some passengers have confirmed reservation and others are on waiting list, full refund of fare, less clerkage shall be admissible for confirmed passengers also subject to the condition that entire tatkal ticket is surrendered for cancellation upto thirty minutes before the scheduled departure of the train
  1. Grant of refund in case of non-commencement or missing of journey due to late running of train shall be governed by clause 6 " Train Running More than Three hours Late and passenger not travelled"
  1. Cancellation of ticket where Railway administration is unable to provide accommodation shall be governed by clause 7" Cancellation of tickets where railway administration is unable to provide accommodation"
  1. Refund of fare on tatkal tickets when passengers are made to travel in lower class for want of accommodation shall be governed by clause 10" Refund of fare when passenger are made to travel in lower class for want of accommodation" and the refund of difference between tatkal charges, if any, shall also be granted

Note: (1) Where confirmed reservation has been provided to RAC or Waitlisted ticket holder at any time upto final preparation of charts, such ticket shall be treated as confirmed/partially confirmed and cancellation charges shall be payable as applicable to confirmed/partially confirmed tickets.



  1. Ticket booked in Premium Special Trains:

Cancellation of CNF/RAC ticket booked in Premium Special Trains is not allowed. However, ticket can be cancelled only if the train is cancelled. Refund will be granted by PRS system as per extant Railway Refund Rules.

Connecting Train ticket booking not allowed on IRCTC trains. As such no refund is applicable on connecting journey tickets

Procedure for Cancellation of E-Tickets

 

  1. E-Tickets can be cancelled on Internet at this website till Chart preparation of the train. Cancellations are not allowed at face to face Railway Counters. If the user wishes to cancel his e-Ticket, he can do so till the time of chart preparation for the train. For train starting up to 12 noon the chart preparation is usually done on the previous night. He can log on to www.irctc.co.in and go to "Booked Tickets" link and select the ticket to be cancelled and can initiate the cancellation by selecting the passengers to be cancelled. Cancellation would be confirmed online and the refund would be credited back to the account used for booking as for normal Internet tickets. If there is any partial cancellation of ticket, please ensure that a fresh e-reservation slip (Electronic Reservation Slip) is printed separately as done for the original ticket.   1. Cancellation of E-Tickets before chart preparation of the train:
    If a confirmed ticket is cancelled more than 48 hrs before the scheduled departure of the train, flat cancellation charges shall be deducted @ Rs.240/- for AC First Class/Executive Class, Rs.200/- for AC 2 Tier/First Class, Rs. 180 for AC 3 Tier/AC Chair car/ AC 3 Economy, Rs.120/- for Sleeper Class and Rs.60/- for Second Class. Cancellation charges are per passenger. If a confirmed ticket is cancelled within 48 hrs and up to 12 hours before the scheduled departure of the train, cancellation charges shall be 25% of the fare subject to the minimum flat rate mentioned in the above clause. Less than 12 hours and upto four hours before the scheduled departure of the train up to chart preparation which is earlier, 50% of the fare paid subject to the minimum cancellation charges. Note the Chart preparation time is the time for the chart preparation from the Train Originating Station or from the previous chart Preparation station.



  1. Cancellation of e-Tickets after the preparation of Reservation charts:
    For Normal User:- E-ticket cannot be cancelled after chart preparation. Users are requested to use the online TDR filing for such cases and track Status of the refund case through tracking service provided by IRCTC. TDR can be filed as per Railway rules:

No refund of fare shall be admissible on the tickets having confirmed reservation in case the ticket is not cancelled or TDR not filed online up to four (4) hours before the scheduled departure of the train.

No refund of fare shall be admissible on RAC e-tickets is case the ticket is not cancelled or TDR not filed online up to thirty (30) minutes before the scheduled departure of the train.

In case, on a party e-ticket or a family e-ticket issued for travel of more than one passenger, some passengers have confirmed reservation and others are on RAC or waiting list, full refund of fare, less clerkage, shall be admissible for confirmed passengers also subject to the condition that the ticket shall be cancelled online or online TDR shall be filed for all the passengers up to thirty (30) minutes before the scheduled departure of the train.


For filing online TDR, select File Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR) from menu Services. For the ticket booked at old site, select Old Transaction History from menu My Transactions and after getting the password verified select File TDR link in the left panel under the "My Transactions" menu. IRCTC will forward the claim to Concerned Railways to process the refund and money of refund amount will be credited back to same account through which payment was made after receiving the same from the concerned Railways. For Agents:- E-ticket cannot be cancelled after chart preparation. Whenever Agents received such a request from their customers they are required to send a mail to etickets@irctc.co.in containing following details:

  1. For Tatkal Tickets Booked as E-Tickets:
    No refund will be granted on cancellation of confirmed Tatkal tickets. For contingent cancellation and waitlisted Tatkal ticket cancellations, charges will be deducted as per existing Railway rules. Partial cancellation of Tatkal e-tickets is allowed



  1. Cancellation of E-Tickets in case of trains cancelled:
    If the train is marked as "CANCELLED" in PRS due to breaches, floods, accidents etc. full refund is permissible in case the ticket is cancelled within three days of the scheduled departure of the train. In case of e-tickets, such cancellations can be done by the customer through Internet.
